Pistol Permit Application Instructions

The East Greenbush Police Department processes these applications as a service to residents of the Town of East Greenbush ONLY. You must be 21 years old, a legal resident of NY State for a period of one year prior to application. Please read these instructions carefully.
Your application package should contain the following forms: 2 applications, 3 fingerprint cards, 1 Hunter's Questionnaire, 1 Residency Record and 1 Mental Health Release form. Complete the application page in duplicate, paying special attention to the following items.
EMPLOYER - include a phone number where your employment can be confirmed.
CHARACTER REFERENCES - must be residents of NYS, non-family members and must have known you for at least 2 years.
ARREST INFORMATION - ALL ARRESTS, including sealed, youthful offender or mistaken identity, must be reported. Your failure to report this information could result in refusal of this permit.
YOU MUST: Sign the front of your application before a Notary Public and on the back of application sign where it asks (in very fine print) for "applicants signature and address".
Include a daytime phone number in the upper right hand corner of one application in case we need to contact you.
Complete all the boxes on the fingerprint cards that would apply to an applicant. And, on the "green" finger print card, box #23. License Type/Job title print "PISTOL".
Complete the Hunter's Questionnaire, Residency Record and sign the Mental Health Release form.
Complete the required Firearms Safety Course (see * below for further instructions).
ATTACHMENTS TO YOUR PERMIT APPLICATION: Include the following with your application package:
3 photographs, current passport-type
1 Copy of birth certificate, drivers license (photo side only) and social security card
1 Copy of any military discharge papers (if applicable)
1 Copy of Immigration and Naturalization papers (if applicable)
2 MONEY ORDERS (no personal checks accepted) from any of the following sources: post office (postal money order), any U.S. Band, Western Union or Travelers Express, made payable as follows:
NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services ....$99.00
Town of East Greenbush Police Department......$20.00
(Fee covers fingerprint processing for criminal history check and departmental expenses for processing.)
To be fingerprinted, bring your completed application package to the police department. An appointment is not necessary, however, it is advisable to call ahead to insure availability of staff to print you. Allow about 45 minutes to be printed. (You may be printed elsewhere if you would like, just be sure the person who prints you signs the print cards and the back of the applications). After you submit your application to us, contact the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office, Pistol Permit Section at 518.270.4082 to make a reservation for the required *Firearms Safety Course. This Department will run record checks, review and verify all information provided on the application. This processing can take up to 3 months. When this is complete, your application is then forwarded to the Rensselaer County Clerks Office where the County Court Judge issues or denies permits.
