"As a Law Enforcement Agengy, Our fundamental duty is
the young and old and to serve all of mankind;
to safeguard lives and property; to guard the innocent against deception,
the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against
violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all
countrymen to liberty, equality and justice."
The first verse of the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics
as well as the verses which follow, hold us as police
officers to the highest reaches of public trust. No less
should be the mission of the police force as a whole.
If being unable to constantly maintain the rigorous
demands of this code, or should the meaning of its verse
become difficult to distinguish between competing ideals,
let a stand be made at "...to serve" as this most clearly
identifies our role as a trusted servant and "...to protect"
as this subtle term conveys the very essence of social order.
These expressions provide a yardstick
against which all police work can be measured,
and shall constitute the motto of the police department.
